Smoke alarms alert neighbours to Sheffield flat fire

Working smoke alarms saved another life over the weekend, according to the county’s fire service.

Firefighters from Elm Lane were called to a fire on Wincobank Avenue, Sheffield, at 10.07pm on Friday night (17 May).

Upon arrival they found a small fire in a ground floor flat which had started when the occupier had fallen asleep whilst smoking.

Nobody was injured in the fire as working smoke alarms sounded and alerted neighbours, who were able to call the fire service.

Smoking is a leading cause of accidental house fire fatalities. If you know somebody who smokes and may be at risk of falling asleep with a cigarette still lit, refer them for a home safety check from our crews today.
