Campaign plea after deliberate fires

Firefighters from across South Yorkshire tackled a number of deliberate fires overnight.

Crews from Edlington were called at 8.32pm yesterday (Wednesday 7 August) to a settee that had been set alight in an alleyway on Oliver Road, Balby.

They were called again at 11.45pm to a car fire on Springwell Lane, Balby. The vehicle was totally destroyed and left unidentifiable.

Meanwhile firefighters from Doncaster were called at 9.05pm to a wheelie bin on fire on Copley Road – leaving at 9.16pm having swiftly dealt with the incident.

A crew from Cudworth was then needed on Doncaster Road, Ardsley to tackle a fire involving some rubbish that had been dumped, and set alight, in a farmers field.

The series of incidents, all within a matter of hours of eachother, has prompted the service to re-iterate its #DoYourBit summer fire safety campaign advice.

In order to help stamp down the number of needless, deliberate fires crews are being called to, the service is asking that people:

  • Don’t leave wheelie bins out overnight and keep gardens and streets free of rubbish
  • Don’t have bonfires during warm weather and be careful with disposable barbeques – not just when using them but when binning them too
  • Report arson to the police and speak to your kids about the dangers of fire-setting
