Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat and found the man in a bedroom who was overcome by smoke, they carried him outside to safety where he was treated by ambulance crews and taken to hospital.

Firefighters used hose reels to put the fire out.

The fire is believed to have started by accident due to cooking.

Firefighters advise residents to follow a few simple step to help them stay safe in their homes.

  • Make sure you have smoke alarms on every floor of your home
  • Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they are working. Please test smoke alarms regularly.
  • Take extra care in the kitchen and never leave cooking unattended
