Towel in microwave sparks fire

Firefighters have issued a warning to residents after they were called to a fire at a home in Sheffield, which was caused by a towel in a microwave.

The damp towel had been placed in the microwave in an attempt to dry it but instead sparked a fire.

The occupant had returned to the kitchen and found the microwave on fire and the room filled with smoke.

Three fire crews from Central, Rivelin and Parkway stations attended the incident on Eyam Road at 10:20am on Saturday morning.

Luckily no one was seriously hurt in the incident.

Fire crews are reminding residents to:

  • Never place items in their microwave unless specified on the items instructions
  • Don’t leave a microwave unattended while on
  • Before using a new micowave oven, always read the manufacturers operating procedures and safety precaustion first
