Sheffield cellar destroyed in fire

A fire in an unoccupied Sheffield property caused significant damage to multiple floors yesterday (Sunday 10 March).

Upon arrival at the incident, on Horndean Road, crews from Central and Elm Lane found flames coming out of the cellar door, due to a large amount of household waste and a mattress on fire inside.

The fire, which was called in at 2.10am by a neighbour after his smoke alarm started sounding, had also spread to the ground floor of the property – leaving severe fire, smoke and heat damage.

Breathing apparatus wearers entered the building to extinguish the fire and ensure there was no-one inside, before clearing the smoke using positive pressure ventilation.

The incident had been dealt with by 5.04am and it is thought to have been started deliberately. Due to carrying out a self-evacuation following early warning from their smoke alarm, the neighbouring family were able to get away without any injuries.
