Firefighters tackle old Barnsley care home blaze

Four fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were called to a blaze at an old care home in Monk Bretton, Barnsley, last night (Wednesday 6 February).

Upon arrival they found the building, which is empty and boarded up, well alight.

Crews from Barnsley, Cudworth, Tankersley and Dearne attended the fire and were supported by Parkway’s aerial ladder platform.

Firefighters spent 5 hours dealing with the inicident which saw the blaze start on the first floor and spread to the roof.

Group Manager Simon Dunker said: “We got the fire under control fairly quickly but it had spread into the roof which, due to the structure of the building, made firefighting slightly more complicated.

“Our crews did a great job and fortunately our aerial ladder platform meant we were able to fight it from above.”

The incident had been dealt with by around midnight, with a fire engine attending at intervals during the night to ensure it hadn’t re-ignited.
