Firefighters from Birley, Parkway and Central fire stations were called to a fire on Leighton Road at around 1.36am this morning (Wednesday 12 June).
The call initially came from a man who’s flat was becoming smoke logged. Upon arrival, crews found that the source of the smoke was a rubbish fire in the stairwell of a set of maisonettes.
This fire involved two televisions and a freezer. Breathing apparatus wearers used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.
It is thought that the blaze had been started deliberately – with firefighters leaving the scene around 2.10am.
