Red plaque unveiled to mark fallen firefighter Frank Mallinson

A commemorative plaque has been unveiled on a Sheffield street in memory of a firefighter who died 57 years ago.

Frank Mallinson was part of the fire crew that attended a fire at the Little Mermaid Café, Norfolk Street, on 7 August 1968 when two explosions ripped through the building, leaving Frank severely injured.

He sadly passed away due to burns and other injuries on the 15th August. Frank was just 28 years old.

The plaque was unveiled at the site of the Little Mermaid Café, now Browns Restaurant, on Norfolk Street, exactly 57 years since the incident occurred on Thursday 7 August 2025.

Relatives of Frank, including his daughter Paula and son Darren, were in attendance, as was Graham Brown, a now retired firefighter who attended the incident with Frank back in 1968.

Recalling the events of that night, Graham said: “There was an almighty bang when the place blew up and the windows shattered.”

“The last thing I saw of Frank was him laid out on the pavement – they were trying to resuscitate him.”

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue firefighters, senior leaders and officials from the Fire Brigades Unions (FBU) also attended.

The FBU has funded the plaque as part of a national initiative to commemorate fallen firefighters. The project is funded by the Firefighters 100 Lottery, a charitable initiative run by the trade union.
