A man has died following a house fire in Barnsley

Update at 10:00am

The house was heavily smoke-logged which made conditions difficult for crews. The occupier of the house was located, rescued and taken to hospital but sadly died.

In our investigation no working smoke alarms were found in the property. This is another reminder of the importance of fitting and regularly testing smoke alarms, which can provide an extra bit of time to escape should a fire break out.

Update at 2:45pm

The investigation into the cause of the fire has now taken place and is found to be accidental due to cooking.

Crews from Barnsley, Cudworth, Tankersley and Penistone were called to the incident on Clarendon Street at 9:31pm on Monday 1 January.

Upon arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus found the first floor of the mid-terraced property well alight. The male occupant, believed to be in his 60’s, has unfortunately died following the fire.

An extensive multi-agency investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and death will now take place.
