Crews tackle house fire in the early hours

A number of crews from Maltby, Edlington, Aston Park and Rotherham attended a fire this morning (31 December) on Strauss Crescent in Maltby.

On arrival, crews found the living room of the semi-detatched property well alight. The fire had also spread to the kitchen and upper floor of the property. By around 8:15am, the fire had been extinguished by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using hose reel jets.

One man was outside when fire crews arrived and was treated for smoke inhalation with oxygen therapy.

An officer remains on scene whilst investigations in to the cause of the fire continue this morning.

A smoke alarm in a neighbouring property had also actuated as a result of the fire, reiterating the importance of having working smoke alarms on each floor of a property. To ensure your smoke alarms are working when you need them:

  • Test regularly by holding down the ‘test’ button until it beeps
  • Change the battery when the low battery warning operates
  • Make sure they are free from dust and dirt
