A man has died following a house fire in Barnsley.

Fire crews from Barnsley, Tankersley and Cudworth fire stations responded to the incident on Darley Avenue, Athersley at around 1.55am on Saturday.

The first floor of the semi-detached, brick built house was well alight and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to search for casualties.

A man, believed to be in his 60s, was sadly found to have died.

No one else is thought to have been inside the property at the time of the incident.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin later on Saturday.
