Washing machine sparks blaze after being left on overnight

A washing machine that had been left on overnight sparked a fire that forced two occupants out of their Doncaster home.

Firefighters from Doncaster and Edlington were called to a house on Anchorage Lane, in Sprotbrough, at 0.39am on Saturday 17 November after reports of a kitchen fire.

Upon arrival breathing apparatus wearers entered the house to extinguish the fire, before using positive pressure ventilation to clear the smoke.

Two men were treated for smoke inhalation following the incident – which left the kitchen severely damaged and the house unoccupiable.

A key focus for the service’s latest safety campaign is washing machines – with fire officers urging people not to leave them on overnight, as in this instance, or when they are out.
