Transfer-in opportunities

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (SYFR) is currently open to applications to transfer in to our service as Wholetime Firefighter, Crew Manager or Watch Manager B.

If you are a permanent, wholetime Firefighter, Crew Manager or Watch Manager within a UK Fire & Rescue Service and are looking for a new opportunity we would welcome an application from you. Unfortunately, we will not be accepting applications from individuals on fixed term wholetime contracts, sole On Call duty systems or staff working within airport and armed forces fire services.

Roles available

  • Wholetime Duty System Firefighter (Competent only)
  • Wholetime Duty System Crew Manager (Development or Competent)
  • Wholetime Duty System Watch Manager B (Development or Competent)

Competent pay will be payable for all joiners on commencement and those in development will be subject to SYFR policy around achievement of competence in role.

Duty and staffing systems

Transferees will be placed on a contract to cover any SYFR Duty System (further details below) but will only be requested to undertake a role on a non-preferred Duty System for a maximum duration of two years. Opportunities to take up Instructor roles at our Training & Development Centre and within our Community Safety Teams may also be available and would be subject to a minimum three-year commitment.

SYFR offer a variety of duty systems and applicants can express preference for these within their Application Form. Preferences will be considered but allocation will be based on workforce requirements and planning.

  • 2-2-4 Duty System

This duty system consists of crews working two day shifts followed by two night shifts followed by four rota days.

  • Day Staffing Duty System

The Day Staffing Duty System consists of individuals working a set pattern of Day Shifts only.

  • Operational Resourcing Team (ORT) Staffing System

The ORT consists of wholetime Firefighters, Crew Managers and Watch Managers who offer cover as part of a flexible resourcing team working varied shifts. ORT members could be required to work any shift/system where staffing is required. This will be on a quarterly pre-planned basis although flexibility will be required where individual staffing needs arise. This system is subject to a 10% salary increase on basic pay (pensionable).
