Homemade firework causes Sheffield flat fire

A man was taken to hospital with burns to his hands, after attempting to make his own homemade firework.

Crews from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s Central station attended the incident on Mount Street, Sheffield shortly before 8.30pm on Wednesday.

The man, who is in his 20s, had been attempting to make fireworks on the balcony of his third floor flat, before one set off and ignited curtains. The blaze spread to his living room before firefighters wearing breathing apparatus arrived to put it out using a hose reel.

Fire officers are warning residents against similar, copycat behaviour.

Station Manager Chris Mee, said: “This behaviour could easily have resulted in a far more serious incident and someone potentially losing their life. It shouldn’t need me to remind people that fireworks should only ever be bought from a reputable retailer, meet current safety standards and only ever be set off in a safe, outdoor environment.“

Fire crews attend two kitchen fires in Doncaster

Firefighters have attended two kitchen fires in Doncaster over the weekend.

Two fire crews were called to a fire on Lime Tree Walk in Denaby Main at 11:30pm on Friday night.  A pan had been left on the hob resulting in a small fire, luckily the occupant had working smoke alarms which had been fitted by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and alerted them to the fire.

At 1:15pm on Saturday crews attended another kitchen fire on Anfield Road in Cantley.  Two elderly people were inside the property and were given fire survival guidance by Control Operators, with both being transferred to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Top tips for avoiding kitchen fires:

  • Oven gloves, tea towels, cardboard and electric leads are well away from the hob
  • Ovens and grill pans should be free from grease and crumbs, as these can easily catch fire
  • Don’t leave cooking unattended and never use chip pans or pans filled with hot oil

Woman and two children rescued by firefighters

A woman and two children have been rescued by firefighters following a fire at their home.

Three fire engines were called to Barnsley Road in Cudworth, Barnsley at 3am on Wednesday morning.

The woman and children were trapped inside the house in the lounge area unable to get out of the front door  due to the door key being in the kitchen where the fire was.

Fire control operators stayed on the phone with the woman giving her valuable fire survival guidance, asking her to close the living room door and place cushions at the bottom of the door to prevent the smoke coming through, while trying to keep her calm.

Fire crews from Cudworth and Barnsley broke in through the front door and led the family to safety.

All three casualties went to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The fire is believed to have started due to an electrical fault in the kitchen.

Area Manager Steve Helps Head of Prevention Protection said; “This is yet another reminder of the importance of having smoke alarms on every level of your home, but also why you should test them regularly.  Only working smoke alarms can save lives, so please,  please do not take smoke alarms down or remove their batteries.”

Also, households should also have an escape plan in place to make sure:

  • Escape routes, like front and back doors are clear at all times
  • Door and window keys are kept in a safe place at night where everyone can find them
  • Everyone in the house, especially children, knows what to do in the event of a fire

E-cigarette charger sparks fire

Two fire engines from Dearne station were called to a fire at a home on Roebuck Chase in Manvers, Rotherham at 8:50pm on Wednesday night.

When crews arrived they found a small fire in the lounge area which was due to an e-cigarette on charge.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.  Luckily no one was injured in the incident.

Fire crews left the scene at 9:30pm.

Head of community safety Trevor Bernard, said: “Fires caused by e-cigarettes are an emerging trend which a few years ago simply did not exist. Whilst e-cigs may offer a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, they are so popular now we do need to make sure people know how to charge them safely.

“The advice for e-cigs is really the same as for many smaller electrical appliances like mobile phones and laptops- don’t be tempted to buy cheap unbranded chargers, don’t leave them to charge whilst you are out of the house or asleep and keep them well away from flammable materials.”

Tips to prevent e-cigarette fires include:

  • charge the device on a flat, solid and stable surface, such as a kitchen worktop
  • keep the device away from flammable or combustible materials when charging
  • never leave the device on a bed or close to soft furnishings, or in a cluttered space
  • don’t exceed the recommended charging time, or leave unattended for any significant length of time
