Explosion at Royston property

Fire crews were called to reports of an explosion at a property on Midland Road, Royston.

Barnsley and Tankersley firefighters attended the incident at around midday on Saturday.

It’s thought an incense stick fell onto a pile of clothes before igniting several aerosol cans which then exploded, blowing out a window pane and damaging the wall of a ground floor bedroom.

No one was hurt in the incident, but fire crews spent several hours making the scene safe.

Station manager Simon Rodgers, who investigated the incident, said: “We’re reminding people to always put things like incense sticks and candles on solid, non flammable surfaces and to never leave naked flames unattended.

“If smoke alarms do sound, make sure you and your family get out of the house as quickly as possible and don’t attempt to tackle the fire yourself.”
