Pizza sparks oven fire

A man has had a lucky escape after he fell asleep while cooking a pizza and a fire broke out in the oven.

Three fire crews from Parkway, Birley Moor and Aston Park stations were called to the property on Spa Lane in Sheffield at 10:30pm on Sunday night.

The smoke alarm had sounded in the premise and alerted a neighbour who woke the man and was able to help him get out safely.

Now firefighters are warning residents to take extra care while cooking and not to leave cooking unattended.  Items such as oven gloves, teal towels, cardboard and electric leads should be well away from the hob.  Also never use chip pans or pans filled with hot oil.
