Two dead following Barnsley house fire

Update 2.30pm on Wednesday:

Investigations are continuing to determine the cause of a fire in Barnsley in which two people lost their lives.

A man and a woman died following the incident on Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar on Tuesday evening. It’s thought the fire started in the front bedroom of the property.

A joint investigation by the police and fire service continued on Wednesday morning. Investigators say it is too early to say for sure what caused the fire, but it is not thought at this stage to be suspicious.


 

Two people have died following a serious house fire in Barnsley.

Firefighters rescued an adult male and adult female from the fire on Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar.

But despite the considerable efforts of firefighters and ambulance crews at the scene, both sadly passed away.

Firefighters were called to the incident at around 6.50pm on Tuesday evening.

Three fire engines- from Tankersley and Dearne stations- attended.

A multi-agency investigation into the cause of the fire has now begun and will continue on Wednesday morning.

No further updates are expected to be released in relation to this incident until later on Wednesday.
